Old Chez Ntemba and the organisers of the ‘African night party’ are being accused of misleading music fans with false advertising. On the promotional poster for their show on 24 May they had a big picture of South African singer, Lira, suggesting that she would be performing at the show, but to the disappointment of fans that turned out not to be true.
The show was hosted on last Thursday at the Old Chez Ntemba in Windhoek as from 20h00, but where was Lira? The manager at Old Chez Ntemba, Sylvester Simabuli claims that Lira was not booked at all to perform there on that night. “Lira was not scheduled to perform last Thursday at the Old Chez Ntemba. There was however a pre-African show hosted under the title, ‘The African night party’,” he explained. He however washed his hands in innocence, instead blaming the organizer of the event for misleading the public. “He was in charge of the posters.” Simabuli further claims that when he saw the poster it was already too late. According to him the posters were already disturbed by that time and were also uploaded onto Facebook. “The posters were all over already and there was nothing that I could do about that. I however, apologised on Facebook and wrote that Lira is not coming,” Simabuli maintains. Lira fans attended the show in numbers and to their great disappointment had to learn that the singer is in fact not attending. The Chez Ntemba manager dismissed allegations though that show was successful because of false advertising, saying that the audience did not attend the show to see Lira. “Many people called me before the show asking when she is coming and I corrected them, saying that she is not coming. So they did not come to see her. They came to be part of the African show,” he insisted. Meanwhile the organiser of the event, Junior Kayembe acknowledge that it was wrong and unethical to put Lira’s face onto the promotional poster and they too blamed the graphic designer. Kayembe claimed that he was not aware of the design of the poster and only saw it once it was already distributed. “I only saw the first design for the poster. I was however not happy with the colour that was used, so I asked Freddy (the graphic designer) to change it, but he never showed me the final sample before printing the poster.” He says that this was the first time that he has worked with Freddy and would not work with him in future, because the designer apparently destroyed his good name. When Informanté Entertainment contacted Lira’s manager in South Africa, Robin Kohl sounded disappointed and said that he is not aware of any such arrangement. “We have no record of such an enquiry. We have performed in Namibia before and are very keen to come back. We are just waiting for the invitation.”
