This tree was one of several along the central west coast uprooted last weekend in strong easterly wind conditions that reached 35 knots at times.

Sandstorms were prevalent up till Monday resulting in poor visibility at times along the coastal roads and sand encroachment in the suburbs of Walvis Bay and Long Beach.
At Long Beach a number of home owners incurred light damage to their properties as strong winds collapsed DSTV satellite dishes, loosened roof covering and broke off tree branches. This uprooted tree in Walvis Bay’s Nangolo Mbumba Avenue is proof to the strength east winds can reach.
Although the east wind subsided as from Tuesday of this week, a cold front reaching in from the south covered the central coastal region in light cloudy conditions, easing the heat and windy conditions. The cold front could however rekindle the east wind conditions within days again. Coastal inhabitants must unfortunately accept the east wind and the accompanying sandy conditions as part of life along the Namibian coast during the winter months.
