Omusati region’s Elim circuit’s education inspector,  Etuna Amunyela, is facing accusations of defamation and character assassination following his alleged declaration that a teacher was mentally-ill.

The apparent ruinous remarks were allegedly made by the high profile official during a recent meeting of school principals. The alleged victim of the verbal abuse (name known to Informanté) confirmed the remarks.
The teacher, who just returned from a year long studies in India, specified that she is even being denied the right to return to her usual duty station (school name withheld), where she was a principal. It is reported that the teacher has already been replaced on the apparent recommendations of Amunyela. The teacher is currently idling at home, earning her salary even though her study leave is over.
“I don’t know under which circumstances can the inspector of education, who is not a medical doctor, declare someone mentally -ill. Worse still, such a violation of human dignity and privacy was uttered among the colleagues of the victim. Since then, this act of humiliation, defamation and character assassination committed by the inspector who should know better about human rights, privacy  and dignity than his average subordinates, has become the talk of the region if not the entire country. I think the inspector should unconditionally apologize to the teacher concerned,”says one of the teacher’s friends.
Contacted for comment Amunyela declined to comment on his alleged slanderous remarks. Instead, he referred Informanté to the Senior Subject Advisor in Omusati region, Modestus Evaristus.
“I think the inspector in question has sent you to a wrong person because I cannot comment on anything since I am not involved. Amunyela is the right person to comment because he is the teacher’s supervisor,“ says Evaristus.
Informante went back to Amunyela to seek further clarification but he still declined to comment. This time, however, he referred Informanté to Omusati Deputy Director of Education,  Loide Shatiwa, who did not pick up her phone or respond to a text message.
