The Omeya golf course, 30 kilometers south of Windhoek will host the first national mid-amateur golf championships on 12 and 13 May 2012. Through sponsorship from Hollard Insurance, the championships will be made up of a medal and medal stableford categories for males over the age of 35 (A division).
The Medal form of play, also known as ‘stroke play’, is based on a scoring method in which the player with the fewest strokes wins. Most professional tournaments are based on this format. The B and C divisions will cater for males playing in the medal stableford category. The medal stableford is a points-based scoring system, working on a notion that the number of strokes taken on each hole relative to par translates into a set number of points, with the winner being the player who accumulates the highest number of points. The A and B division will play a championship setup with fast greens and stretched tees, while the C division will play a shorter setup. Namibian golfer Ruan Huysamen, won the previous medal competition held at Omeya a fortnight ago by 70 strokes. Francois Hanekom had the best net score on the day with 72 strokes, followed by Marc Gregan and Michael Tune, who shared second place respectively with 73 strokes each.
