The University of Namibia (UNAM) tennis team clinched the Tertiary Institution Sports Association of Namibia (TISAN) trials held in the capital on 5 May 2012.
Second ranked Namibian national player, Johan De Wit, proved to be a cut above his peers and did not lose a single match in the round robin playoffs. The players played a pro set against each other with De Wit totaling 32 games in four matches, putting him in first position. Jonas Lamek was placed in second place with 24 games, followed closely by Walter Kamukono, who took third place by winning with 19 games. All three players represented UNAM, which won the team competition with ease. The ladies’ final was played between the Polytechnic of Namibia’s Martha Venasius and Jelldda Haufiku of Unam’s northern campus. The first set belonged to Venasius, but the match swung the way of Haufiku as Venasius made several unforced errors. The final score was 3 – 6, 7 – 5, 6 – 2 in favour of Haufiku. The Oshakati based Haufiku is the only active tennis player in the region and regularly uses a wall as her practice partner. “Her performances show us what can be achieved with hard work. We take our hats off to Jelldda,” says coach Kallie Heese. The Namibian Tennis Student team will soon be selected and will represent Namibia in the Zone 6 Confederation of University and College Sport Association (CUCSA) games from 16 to 20 July 2012. South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia, Malawi and Angola are the other countries participating. Namibia’s top tennis players John Erasmus, Ricky Honnibal and Inke Jagau, all currently studying in America are expected to join and this will surely strengthen the team.
