Abuse of freedom of religion |

The supreme law of Namibia guarantees the fundamental human rights and freedom of every citizen and that includes freedom to practice any religion. The land of the brave therefore is a secular state, which means all religions are regarded as equal before the law. The inalienable right to religious freedom is basically being abused in the wake of the mushrooming of churches associated with miracles, faith healing and self-proclaimed prophets. In essence, these prophets could be equated to a similar menace of witchdoctors that are claiming to cure HIV/Aids and making other ridiculous claims of possessing paranormal powers.

Violence at behest of strict laws |

The desperate cries at all levels of society to attempt to find solutions to the growing scourge of violence against the most vulnerable of society - especially women and girls - were not only amplified last week at a conference of the Council of Churches of Namibia (CCN), but it is clear that the cry is that there are obviously not a solution to this growing blot on the national conscience.

THERE is a growing concern that Namibians are becoming a nation of finger pointers and pessimists where the blame cannot be shared, not even shifted, but rather swept under the carpet. Thus, an unsuspecting future leader will have to deal with the hidden mess that will only be discovered because it does not fit the room anymore.
There is also a growing, but easily explained, tendency to automatically presume that when ministries fail it is the failure of an individual in Cabinet and that he or she must be replaced. Past experience has proven this idea to be totally misplaced and even dangerous, if not at least irresponsible.

A culture of denial has seeped into our society among leaders, the elite and the ordinary man on the street, specifically on why the country is becoming a sick nation, riddled with horrific crimes against the most vulnerable members of our citizens.

So many families spend most of their precious time praying and crossing their fingers for their loved ones travelling, hoping they will not get involved in a fatal accident and become just another statistic announced daily in the media and social avenues.
