THE four day African Continental cycling championship involving more than 18 countries kicked off yesterday in Windhoek.

At stake is  one of the five UCI (International Cycling Union) continental jerseys currently worn by Namibian Dan Craven. Craven claimed the closest continental championships in Morocco last year when he beat South African champion Jamie Ball by a spitting distance. But the reigning champion is unable to defend his jersey this year as he is out on injury. Compatriot Eric Hoffman carries the burden of keeping the jersey in Namibia for the second successive year.
Hoffman, who recently claimed the local Cycle Classic will lead the Namibian team of seasoned campaigner Mannie ‘Mr Africa’ Heymans, Heinrich Kohne, Tjipe Murange, Jacques Celliers among others. Close to 200 cyclists from across Africa will be in action where South Africa and Senegal have some of the top contenders.
Some of the countries present include, Egypt, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Gabon, Cote D’Ivoire, Lesotho, Libya, Mauritius, Morocco, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Seychelles, Zambia, Zimbabwe.
