I don’t like Manchester United. Sir Alex has been blaming the referees for every match they lost but when they win, he does not complain.
But even when they drew, he blames the match officials. I wonder if there is a drug in his chewing gum which makes him see a different game from the one the whole world will be watching. Ferguson is such a bad loser. Every game, in which Man U is trailing or is headed for a draw, the Red Devils get more injury time minutes than any other team in the Premiership. God Bless Tottenham Hotspurs. I also have a feeling local referees do not watch international games, neither are they up to date with latest rules of engagement. For instance, in the MTC Premiership it is a sin for a captain, let alone any other player to approach a referee in protest. If a player attempts to verbally communicate with the match official, the biggest likelihood is a yellow card. If a coach protest on the touch line, he is either sent off or most decisions start going against him. I have seen senior players like Giggs, Ronaldinho and Raul approach referees with queries during a match. At some stage, a player becomes so emotional as he demands justice and most European referees understand that. With our local referees, if you do that, you would be sent off immediately and I think that is wrong. Referees must respect players, if they are to earn their respect. Way back, a referee was not allowed to speak a single word during a match. His language to players was only a whistle, but I think players today are now assets and hence most referees should treat them like human beings not animals. Some of our league referees don’t even give first time warnings. They just dish out cards. They think every tackle is a foul. This limits our defenders’ creativity. On Sunday, as Manchester were losing, I saw Rooney holding the arm of a linesman in an animated chat as he pleaded for a decision to go his way. You don’t dream of such in the MTC Premiership. I have seen Ferguson shouting at the fourth official and that Aston Villa coach Martin O’Neill, kicks water bottles but match officials understand him. But if Ali Akan or Willie Kapukare do it here, its not football. That brings the question: who watches the watchman? How do referees take stock of themselves? How do they improve on their performance from the previous games, besides jogging on the pitch. Don’t match officials require seasonal refresher courses just like coaches? Since we don’t have video footage where they can borrow videos from a match and study their mistakes, I think something else should be done to help them. Not that our referees are bad. No. They just need help. White numbering on white jersey Blue Waters might be one of the poorest teams in the league but they must be fined for sewing a jersey which can only be worn during the day. You can’t see their jersey numbers when they play in the evening. Blue Waters must change their kit immediately because they are killing our eyes and we struggle to see the players’ in the dark. How can you put whites on a white jersey? You have to wear binoculars to see the players’ numbers. Lastly can the municipality be human enough to make Sam Nujoma a football stadium by putting a computerised ‘time and score-board’ on the BJ-end of the stadium? It will make the stadium look more proper and it just needs a small budget from our water bills to erect a computerised score board. Already fans struggle to know how many minutes are left in the game. We would never know if the referee has added time or not. Please. WaDi
