Sir, I have been at the University of Namibia (UNAM) for three years now and have made the following observations:
• The management does not care about students at all. They send their children to all nice universities in the world and make stupid decisions because they know that their kids are not at UNAM. • Since I came to Unam, there has been cheap talk about hostel construction but until now there is nothing and there will probably be nothing for the next 10 years for hostel construction. • There has been talk about a student centre but nothing has been implemented. I spoke to the SRC President, Mr. Job Shipululo Amupanda after coming from the recent council meeting held on Friday 20 November 2009. I know he might not like it that I leaked the conversation but due to public interest, I have to. Being a leader I respect him so much and knowing how he approaches student issues, I know he will understand. He told me he walked out of the meeting due to bias and insensitivity to the plight of students. He said he could not take it especially when they all agreed to increase hostel fees next year by 10% despite the l conditions. There is an assumption everyone has money. There is definitely lack of leadership at UNAM. There is compulsory breakfast, evening classes for full time students, dilapidated hostels, mixed up priorities, lazy and incompetent staff and the list is endless. Now we have to wait for a week to get our refunds but when they want their money, they want it very fast. We need a revolution at UNAM. The 2009 SRC have given us a foundation. Oh yes the Way Forward 2009. Let’s start a revolution! Unam Education student |
