CAM Namibia presents the new Plutus single cab 2.2 litre bakkie, priced at around N$150 000. Speed took one for a spin around the block, through town and out onto the bush-paths surrounding Windhoek this week.

The first thing about this macho bakkie that jumps out and grabs one’s attention is its undeniable good looks. Rugged and clean-cut the Plutus features an impressive profile and strong lines indicative of the no-nonsense work-ethic of this utilitarian pick-up. Fresh and modern, this bakkie also shows off thoughtfully positioned drainage holes and a quality rubberised lining in the cargo bin for working in the wet. The Plutus is capable of working just about anywhere, with its raised body and high ground clearance, big tyres and powerful engine able to kick out 196 Nm of torque at just 2200 revolutions per minute.
Once out of the city traffic the Plutus really comes into its own as it manoeuvres easily over broken rocks, water-washed holes and loose footing on gravel paths. The simple to drive five-speed gear system is responsive and allows for plenty of power to be delivered as and when needed. There is a simple joy in driving this hard-working labourer over obstacles and up steep hills.
Truly a minimalist and manly machine, the Plutus does not mess around with too many funny gadgets, tricks or trinkets. In fact, apart from the extendable arm-rest which doubles for a between-seat utility hold of appreciable depth, there really isn’t much space to keep a whole lot of stuff in the cabin. A really big work-hand may also find the interior a little cramped, but the ‘bak’ is definitely big enough to accommodate anything that does not find a spot inside. At any rate, this single cab encourages a spirit of get-there, load-up and set-off, rather than one of wasting time sitting around in the vehicle.
Manufactured by the China Motor Corporation in Johannesburg, South Africa, the Plutus 2.2l comes standard with a driver’s side air-bag that needs the seat-belt to be worn before it is activated, a high brake-light and a rear roll-bar for safety. Also standard is the electric air-conditioning, central locking, power steering and windows as well as an MP3 CD Player.
