Hitradio Namibia is a brand new radio station that promises to heat up the Namibian airwaves from the beginning July. It is a German station, but English audiences can also tune in. Their studio is located in Olympia in Windhoek and will broadcast in Windhoek on 99.5FM and at the Central Coast (Henties Bay, Swakopmund and Walvis Bay) on 97 FM.

Wilfried Hähner, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the new station, says “Hitradio Namibia is another addition to Namibia’s colourful spectrum of private radio stations. 70% of the station’s program content will be in the German language and the remaining 30% will be in English.” Hähner is positive that the station will expand to other towns at a later stage. He says that this is just the beginning and that more success will come as the station grows over the coming years.
“The station is also be available via the internet. We believe that broadcasting on the internet is an important marketing tool,” adds Sybille Rothkegel, the Financial Manager at Hitradio.
Hähner says that the aim of the station is to inform, educate and entertain the Namibian public. “Our emphasis will be on news-dissemination and nation-building. Hitradio Namibia will endeavour to objectively inform people about happenings, especially in Namibia, and to support the Namibian Government by informing the German-speaking community in Namibia about achievements and challenges of the various development plans.”
Hähner says that the latest Namibian music will also be featured. According to the CEO local music will be broadcast to promote local talent and to provide artists with a platform through which to expand their music.
So, where did the idea for the new station come from? The CEO claims that to run a German and English radio station has always been a dream for him. “I have been dreaming about this moment for many years. Rothkegel and I have been planning this project for the past year. It is finally here and I cannot wait to start officially,” he says with obvious excitement.
When Hähner was 12 years old he started working as a radio presenter for the ‘Youth program’ at the NBC German radio channel. He has also worked at 99FM and Radio Kudu in Windhoek. The sole shareholders of Hitradio Namibia are Wilfried Hähner (CEO) and Sybille Rothkegel (Financial Manager).
