Three weeks after the conclusion of the country’s one million dollar MTC/NPL soccer season and still no awards in sight. The Namibian Premier league NPL and its main sponsor Mobile Telecom Communication (MTC) has not forgotten to honour players for the 2011/12 campaign says the league administrator of the NPL, Lorraine Gowases.
Gowases says indeed such a move is planned. “But we couldn’t hold the awards now. As you are aware the Brave Warriors are playing [international games] and most players from Black Africa, are on international duty so it won’t be fair to hold it now while they are not here.” Brave Warriors are currently engaged in major international games with their 2014 World Cup and 2013 African Nations Cup qualifiers. Gowases could thus not reveal the exact date on which the awards would be handed over, but said that in due course a press release will be issued to the media concerning the awards in all categories. “It won’t take long to vote. It takes only two to three days.” Meanwhile Black Africa are favourites to win the best team award after winning the championship. Their only defeat this season came when they were beaten by Ramblers after they had already wrapped up the title. Black Africa’s Jerome Louis and relegated Hotspurs striker, Richard Kavendji, are expected each to get a cool N$15 000 for the top goal scorer award, courtesy of MTC after both ended the campaign level on 12 goals a piece. This will be Louis’ third consecutive award as top goal scorer. MTC are the main sponsors for the awards. There will also be awards for the two streams’ first divisions’ winners, Tura Magic of Windhoek and Rundu Chiefs. Both clubs are expected to be awarded N$50 000 dollars.
