The Kambazembi Traditional Authority has identified more than 25 cases of land-grabbing and illegal occupation of communal lands in and around Okakarara.
“The occupants will have to pay a visit at the Traditional Authority after the authorities realised recently that virgin lands at Otjituuo, Okamatapati and Okondjatu have been occupied illegally,” the Chairperson of the Kambazembi Traditional Authority, Vetondouua Maharero told Informanté. ‘‘The new occupants have already started to build houses, but they have to report to the authorities. They would have to answer a questionnaire; how long have you been staying there and how did you obtain the land?” Maharero said. Maharero adds that if a certain individual claims that the land belongs to them, they should provide proof of ownership. He says that if the records state that they own the land, then the land would be given to them, but if not they would have to leave. He further requests community members to refrain from grabbing and occupying land illegally. “It is not good to occupy land that does not belong to you. If you don’t have a certificate or any proof that states that the land is yours, it is not yours. If someone is landless they can go to the municipality and find out ways in which they can own land,” he advised.
