YOU see them in the newspapers’ social scenes and well-dressed at the hottest parties; Electra and Alma are two vivacious ladies with a zeal for socializing and they say there are rules to the game of socialites. The girls warn that some women may take socialising too far and forget their value as women. They say that getting too drunk or having cat-fights are some of the no-no’s of a sophisticated socialite.
“You should always be calm and collected, don’t get into fights. Avoid them at all times. You should also not get wasted, it’s a huge turn off,” advised Alma. They advise girls to refrain from drinking alcohol if they can’t control themselves. “You’ll end up falling and vomiting all over the place and you’ll make a complete fool of yourself. If you do that you will end up the following day’s topic and you do not want that!” Electra emphasised: “Socially acceptable behaviour wins!” Another no-no they have listed is hogging the dance-floor all night long as though you are being paid to entertain the crowd. “Don’t be on the dance-floor the whole night. You can dance for a while and go sit and have a drink and chat with your girls then go back to the dance-floor,” Alma explained. To have fun you need to be with people who can loosen up and have a good time. People who are not shy to goof around and those who can dance. “It is important to hang out with reliable people,” Electra points out. It may appear as though hanging out and having some drinks is costly, but the ladies’ advice is to spend smart. “You only go out once or twice a month. All you need is your entrance fee and cash for your drinks. It can only get costly if you are too much of a drinker.” You may see them dressed exquisitely and wonder if they import their clothes. The lasses say they shop anywhere, including Mr. Price. “I shop anywhere. You can rock any outfit, doesn’t matter where you got it,” Alma confesses. The girls list Monaco, Mafelas and Mansion as the best places to hang out at in Windhoek, “Mansion is perfect on a chilled Sunday.” As children we were told that one apple a day keeps the doctor away. As an adult we’re advised to live each day like it’s your last, to wear a smile despite the pain, to always look good and socialise! “Socialising isn’t a must-do, but it can be good for you at times. It helps you relax, set your mind free, meet new people and interact,” said Alma. Electra concludes, “It increases your confidence, interpersonal skills and builds social and professional networks.”
