LOCATED in the southernmost part of the NamibRand Nature Reserve in the Hardap region, the Namib Desert Environmental Education Trust (NaDEET) last week gave a number of environmental education lessons to a group of 35 children from the Klein Aub Primary school.

The group, which arrived at NaDEET’s environmental education center on 11 June, learned about living sustainable lifestyles, through solar cooking, the use of solar electricity for lighting and saving water.

The learners were also taught about the importance of plants and animals. Established in 2003, the Namib Desert Environmental Education Trust (NaDEET) embraced Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) as a very important tool towards achieving sustainable living.
The overall aim of NaDEET is to inspire Namibians to participate in finding viable solutions to local and national environmental issues to create a healthy and sustainable future for all.
The learners’ accompanying teacher, Brandon Kooper told Informanté that the learners learnt a number of good things which will contribute towards environmental protection.
“You can really see that they are learning,” he said. Since lack of transport to take school children to NaDEET is the biggest challenge at the moment, the Ministry of Education provided transport to the learners to take them to the education centre, while the whole visit was sponsored by the European Union through NaDEET.
NaDEET provides a variety of environmental education programmes tailored to Grades 5-12 based on the Namibian National Curriculum for Basic education. Approximately 4 500 school children have so far attended the educational programme since 2003.
