Prominent lawyer, Dirk Conradie and Sarah Damases, the ex-wife of his law firm partner, Judge President Petrus Damaseb, posted bail of N$30 000 each after they were arrested on charges of corruption early this week.

The case results from an Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) investigation into Conradie’s alleged abuse of his position as chairman of the MTC Board of Directors when he purportedly persuaded DV8 Saatchi & Saatchi (DV8) to take on Damases as a shareholder of DV8 in return for awarding the tender to the agency.

DV8 was reportedly one of three companies that were shortlisted for MTC’s advertising campaign, worth N$60 million.

“The Anti-Corruption Commission investigated allegations that certain corrupt practices had been committed by Mr. Dirk Conradie, the chairperson of the MTC Board of directors, and Ms. Sarah Damases,” a statement from the corruption watchdog revealed.

“According to the allegations Mr. Conradie corruptly solicited a gratification as an inducement or reward for giving assistance or using his influence in the promotion or procuring of a contract with MTC for the provision of advertising services. It is furthermore alleged that Ms. Damases conspired with Mr. Conradie to commit the offence,” said Acting Director of ACC, Erna van der Merwe.

Conradie and Damases were arrested on Tuesday and appeared before court the same day. They both posted bail of N$30 000 each and their case was remanded to the 27th of July 2012 for further investigation. Conradie and Damaseb could not be reached for comment as their phones went unanswered.
