A boxing treat awaits fans on July 28 when three of the country’s top boxers step into the ring at the Ramatex Factory. For years Nestor Tobias, Namibia’s undisputed king of boxing promotion has built an empire around Paulus Moses, Paulus Ambunda and Bethuel Ushona and it is rare for all three fighters to fight on the same night at the same venue.
However, on 28 July the three boxers face career defining fights when they take on top notch opposition and Tobias has called on fans to come out in force to show their support and witness the biggest boxing spectacle ever staged in the country. Defeat for any of the boxers could spell an end to an illustrious career. Defeat for all three could bring the Nestor Sunshine Boxing Academy crumbling to the ground. A win will open the door for a crack at the biggest prize in boxing: a world title fight. The main fight - although all three bouts could qualify to be the main attraction - sees Ambunda up against 28-year old Brazilian William Prado in a WBO bantamweight title eliminator. The Brazilian captured the WBO Latino bantamweight in June and is considered to be in his prime. Prado has a professional record of 19 wins, with only a single loss. He is a power-puncher and 13 of his wins have come by way of knockout. Informanté caught up with the undefeated WBO Africa bantamweight champion Ambunda, who is leaving no stone unturned in his quest to be a world champion. Ambunda described how his career boils down to just this one fight. “I promise to fight my heart out and there is no way I will lose”, Ambunda insisted. Although he has not seen any videos of Prado, Ambunda reckons his coach has done enough to prepare him for the fight. “For me, there is no need to check the videos as I am a professional and will go into the fight with my own game plan,” says Ambunda, who is sparring with Abmerk Shidjuu and Immanuel Naidjala in preparation for the fight. At stake is the WBO bantamweight title as the winner is guaranteed a shot at the world title. This is a dream fight for Ambunda who says his past achievements cannot be compared to the prospect of wearing a world title belt. Former WBA lightweight champion Moses takes on South African Cassius Baloyi in a fight he must win to resuscitate his waning career. But it will not be easy, as Moses last fought in a WBO lightweight title challenge on March 10 and was unconvincing in his defeat at the hands of Ricky Burns. In Baloyi he faces a battle-hardened warrior with 37 wins and 6 losses from a 44 fight career that saw him win the IBF and IBO super featherweight championships, as well as the WBU super bantamweight and featherweight belts. Moses has fought at this level before and this should provide for a titanic battle. Rounding up the big fights will be Ushona against Isaac Hlatshwayo of South Africa in a bout that could go either way. Ushona has a reputation for choking on the big stage. In Hlatshwayo he comes up against a former IBO light welterweight and welterweight champion. Ushona admitted in an interview that Hlatshwayo ranks among the best fighters he has faced. A win will afford him the chance to challenge for a world title. Tickets are on sale and priced at N$50 for the grandstands, N$200 for the middle row and $500 for the VIP stand, making this boxing masterpiece an affordable must-see.
