The official launch of the computer center at the Windhoek police station in Windhoek was hosted on 27 June. During the launch event students also graduated from a two-week course that was completed by 20 students.
Commissioner Fetus Shilongo said that he is grateful for the computer center. He adds that the project first started as an idea, but has today become a reality. “Now police officers are educated to fight crime with computers,” he says confidently. The Deputy Inspector General for Operations of the Namibian Police, Major-General Villio Nghifindaka is convinced that police officers can now manage information through computers. “With the establishment of the computer centre police officers have the opportunity to move away from manual work,” he said. One of the graduates, Petus Gibeon, agrees with Nghifindaka. He says that officers are now free from manual work. “Gone are the days of long hours of writing. No more documents will be lost, because a book was misplaced or pages were lost.” he argued. Another graduate, Somaes Selotia, says that she is grateful for the opportunity to receive a certificate. “The computer centre makes work so much easier. I also would like to encourage other officers to attend the course. You get your computer licence and you might need the training in the future,” she advised. Besides the new computer center police officers will also start with fitness training next month. According to Commissioner Shilongo, police officers should be fit, because they sometimes have to run after criminals to catch them.
