Ten finalists have already been selected for Miss Namibia 2012, meaning the current Miss Namibia’s journey will come to an end next month when she will hand over the crown to the next beauty queen.
Luzaan van Wyk was crowned as Miss Namibia 2011 at the Windhoek Country Club Resort on 30 July last year. The 25-year-old describes her reign as one filled with many good experiences. “Being crowned Miss Namibia was an absolute pleasure. There were so many memorable experiences and people whom I will cherish forever,” she says with unbridled enthusiasm. Throughout the year she has met many people from diverse walks of life in and around Namibia and she says that it was spectacular, but sometimes she also found it heart-wrenching. “To see the real need of so many under-privileged families and especially kids faces every day, I wish I could take my fellow Namibians with me to experience this first-hand.” Luzaan will hand over the crown to the next Miss Namibia on 4 August, but she says that she is quite ready to. “There is a time to come and a time to go. My time as Miss Namibia 2011 is up and this ending is another girl’s brand new beginning as Miss Namibia 2012. However, being part of the Miss Namibia pageant is a precious moment in time that I will treasure for as long as I live,” she says. She adds that she will not be Miss Namibia in a few weeks anymore, but there is nothing stopping her from taking up a role as part of her social responsibility. The Namibian beauty further advises the next winner to enjoy every minute of her reign. “Enjoy every single minute of your year, because it is over in the blink of an eye. Always stay humble and be the best Miss Namibia that you can be. Take pride in your title and be a beautiful, intelligent and independent young woman,” she says. Luzaan admits that she will miss driving in her sponsored vehicle and the people that wave and stop her just to say hello. Luzaan however wishes that she had taken more photographs of her experience within and beyond Namibia’s borders. Luzaan admits that she did not receive as much media coverage as previous winners; “I attended a function in Ongwediva that was aimed at fundraising for a baby girl who was born pre-maturely. We helped to raise money and awareness to assist many other mothers and babies facing the same problems. That event was hosted on a Saturday and received very little media coverage,” she says. Luzaan attended Orban Primary School and completed her secondary education at Windhoek High School. She matriculated in 2005. She studied Law in South Africa in 2010 and obtained her LLB degree from Stellenbosch University in South Africa. She is currently working as a candidate legal practitioner in Windhoek.
