Pop, rock and rave artist, Sandra Blak’s four latest singles have been all over the airwaves for the past two weeks.
Sandra Blak, whose real name is Sandra Joackim, says that she wanted to bring something new to the Namibia music industry. “There are already many kwaito, R&B and hip-hop artists in Namibia and that is why I could not do the same music,” the 20-year old artist says. On one of her singles, ‘I am Fly’, parts of the lyrics are in Russian. The other three singles are ‘New Day,’ ‘Dance Mood’, and ‘Music’. ‘Dance Mood’ is a funky party song that talks about letting go of your friends to dance. “I am Fly’ encourages listeners to be wise in life and in ‘Music,” Sandra Blak says that she is in love with music and tells the DJ to increase the volume. ‘New Day’ is an inspirational song that encourages hard work. In the song, Sandra Blak advises listeners to forget about yesterday’s problems and to focus on the new day. Sandra says she wrote the song based on personal experience. “There were times that I wanted to give up on music. Before I released the singles there were difficulties. I did not have money to work on my album and at times I felt that it would be better if I just leave music and focus on my studies, but each new day brought hope.” The 20-year old musician was born in South Africa and raised in Namibia. She came to Namibia with her mother when she was six years old. “I am leaving Namibia later this month, but when I come back I will release my first album. For now the public can enjoy my new singles,” Sandra says. She is currently studying medicine at Bogomolets National Medical University in Ukraine. She still has four years left to complete her studies. “At the moment I am not sure. I might do both (music and medicine) or I might just do one. Let me cross that bridge when I get there.”
