A former prolific NBC Oshiwambo Service presenter was recently arrested for allegedly faking her uncle’s death in order to get her hands on more than N$180,000 from insurance brokers, Old Mutual. Nanguloshi Nghilengwa, who also had a short stint at Omulunga Radio, was arrested for allegedly forging the benefit policy of his ageing uncle, Lucas Hanghome, who allegedly registered her as a sole beneficiary of his pension money when he dies.
Nghilengwa allegedly presented fake documents to Old Mutual, indicating that her uncle was dead. The claims are said to have been made in 2004, but the irregularity only came was only discovered recently. Sources told Informanté that Hanghome realised that his monthly allowance from his pension fund stopped coming in. Sources say, that after making inquiries, Old Mutual officials told the uncle that he was ‘dead’ and the signatory to the fortune had already claimed her spoils. Details of case number CR 26/07 show that Nghilengwa was arrested on April 16 and thereafter locked up in police custody at Ondangwa. Warrant Officer Theophillus Willem of Police public relations confirmed to Informanté that Nghilengwa was arrested for fraud. She appeared in the Ondangwa Magistrate’s Court on April 17 and was released on a bail of N$5,000. Police reportedly also arrested Nghilengwa’s husband, also called Nghilengwa, in Omaruru on April 25 before transferring him to Ondangwa where he was kept in police custody. He appeared before Magistrate H. Ngara on April 28 and was also released on a bail of N$5000. Nghilengwa’s husband was arrested as a suspected accomplice to the alleged fraud, police say. Sources say Hanghome who has previously worked for Consolidated Diamond Mines (CDM) has made Nghilengwa, his niece, a sole beneficiary of his pension benefits when he dies. Nghilengwa perhaps feeling Hanghome was taking too long to die, allegedly presented a fake death certificate to Old Mutual in her bid to claim the money. Convinced by the alleged skilfully forged ‘death certificate’, the insurance giant approved the payment of N$180 687 to Nghilengwa. Old Mutual’s Manager for Central Marketing Lelanie Basson confirmed the figures allegedly claimed by the Nghilengwas. She said the company has launched an internal investigation, and charges of false claims have already been laid with the police. “I cannot get into further details as this may jeopardise the investigations,” Basson said. The Nghilengwas return to the court on July 14.
