The Organisation for the Empowerment of Widows, Widowers and Orphans of HIV/Aids Namibia (OEWONA) and Lifestyle Foods held a Charity River Challenge Breakfast Meeting last week Thursday sponsored by the Windhoek Country Club, to report on the organisation’s progress over the past year and explain how previous donations were put to use.
OEWONA is a welfare organisation, under the office of the First Lady, Penehupifo Pohamba, which aims at complementing the work of the Government and other development organisations to improve the living standards of widows, widowers and HIV/Aids orphans, and other vulnerable groups in Namibian society. Speaking at the breakfast, First Lady Pohamba said the past year had been a difficult year due to high fuel prices coupled with high interest rates which deterred donors from giving much to the needy. She stressed the organisation’s continued emphasis on the importance of education, training and skills development of the Namibian people. She called on the public to support the upcoming Charity River Challenge, the ‘Boat Race’ in the Kavango River, to help raise funds for the OEWONA.
