GROOVA Wakeez, a seven-member upcoming dance group, wowed the audience at a NADA Modelling Academy fashion show at Wine Bar last week Saturday.
The group, which was inspired by the American dance group, Jabba Wakeez, specialises in an R&B-Hip Hop mixture of tricky dance moves. Apart from the inspiration the group got from America’s Jabba Wakeez, their name, Groova Wakeez, was decided on because the letter ‘G’ is the seventh letter in the alphabet and at the same time symbolises the seven members in the group. Their performance at Wine Bar was the second after a previous performance at the Miss Academia beauty pageant semi finals early this year. The group is also scheduled to perform at Miss Namibia 2009. “Apart from the fact that it (Miss Namibia pageant) will gain us massive recognition, we are all looking forward to delivering a great performance,” said Duwayne, one of the group’s dancers. Dressed up in masks and gloves as part of the performance, the group said their dance routines articulate the lyrics of the songs they perform. “We use these masks so that we can be recognised as a group and not as individuals,” said Rickson. They currently do not have a manager or a sponsor. They also said they were looking forward to owning a dancing studio with mirrors on the walls one day. “We rehearse in a house and also don’t have a mentor but it would be great to own a dancing studio with a lot of mirrors because it will help us to be more creative,” Duwayne added.
