Chance for Brave Warriors to regain past glory PDF Print E-mail

SO much has been said about our beloved national soccer team’s fortunes and misfortunes.Brave Warriors have been slipping in form since their first appearance in the African Cup of Nations finals in Burkina Faso in 1998. Coaches have come and coaches have gone but the Namibian nation is still in despair over the team’s performance.Having just come from a bitter home defeat at the hands of northern neighbours Zambia, albeit in a friendly match, this weekend presents the Brave Warriors with a great opportunity to redeem past glory. The national team dates Libya in an African Nations Cup qualifier at the Independence Stadium this weekend. Namibia suffered a 2-1 defeat to The Greens during their last encounter in Tripoli last March. With a few people still harbouring some hope for better fortunes for the Brave Warriors, a win at the weekend will definitely rekindle the chances of our national team’s qualification to the African Nations Cup in Ghana come next January. But do the Brave Warriors still have the pedigree to upset the more experienced Libyans? Discipline has always eluded the Brave Warriors at crucial times. More often, we read reports of senior team members dissappearing to nightclubs and bars during camp. Some even sneak out the night before the match. Honestly, how can one expect to get results under such circumstances? This time Ben Bamfuchile must instill discipline at all cost, knowing that we are playing hosts. African soccer has become more competitive lately and teams are putting in much more in terms of material and personal commitment to achieve desired results. We hope the Brave Warriors, under tutelage of their Zambian-born mentor have learnt a lesson a lesson or two from their past experiences as far as discipline is concerned. It is very easy for a nation to lose its faith in national team, but it is certainly not easy to regain that faith. In the past years club football in the country has enjoyed more following than the Brave Warriors, and understandably so. Fans are tired of flocking to the Independence or Sam Nujoma stadiums only to come back home with tails between their legs.Brave Warriors, please, this is your chance to prove the nation wrong and don’t blow it. The match against Libya is crucial in keeping the hopes for Africa Cup qualification alive so please do it for the nation. As coach Bamfuchile put it: " the team needs fans more than anything and we need them to support the team even when the chips are down".
