CENORED Chief Executive Officer Mburumba Appolus has trashed allegations that his electricity distribution company is overcharging its customers as compared to the Ondangwa based counterpart Nored.
Some irate customers of Cenored in and around Otjiwarongo complained to Informanté that they are shocked and disappointed by what they called Cenored’s habitual tendency of overcharging and exploiting them. They say this has been ongoing despite increasing complaints by consumers. Some of the aggrieved clients said Cenored is overcharging them, far worse than other electricity distribution companies such as Nored which is based at Ondangwa. “We do not know why Cenored is so harsh with its charges while others such as Nored are more reasonable and understanding. Nored is charging 81.60 units per N$100 but Cenored is killing our pockets with an exorbitant 60.24 units per N$100. This is completely unfair given the unemployment situation and poverty in our country,” said a disgruntled Cenored customer. According to the source there is general anger and frustration among people who receive electricity from Cenored. The hardest hit would be the poor and unemployed. Cenored CEO Appolus told Informanté that in September 2011 Nampower tariffs increased by 18,3 percent, which made Cenored pre-paid tariffs to go up by 2,3 percent. This means Cenored charges remained unchanged since July 2010 making a unit to cost N$1.66. Approached for further comment the Public Relations Officer of the country’s Electricity Control Board Cedric Mwilima did not respond to text messages.
