Over 130 swimmers took part in the annual Pointbreak Open Water Challenge last week Sunday. 18 year old Florian Hentzen took top spot in the 2.1km swim showing that he is Namibia’s best open water swimmer.Hentzen took first place in the Pupkewitz Jetty Mile a few months earlier. But it was not all plain sailing for Hentzen, the starting pace was fast as veteran Alexander Skinner created a lead of at least 10m by the time he had reached the first buoy.
Skinner maintained his lead for the first 2 laps and the majority of the third and final lap, and it was only in the last 200m that Hentzen was able to close the gap and finally over take Skinner. During an interview after the race Hentzen said I definitely found this race harder...The Jetty Mile is a straight race, and I don’t mind the waves. This race is three loops of 700m which gets to your mind a bit”. Alexander Skinner was second overall and winner of the senior age category in a time of 27:48.
