Troubled Namibian Hip-hop artist Jericho, who has recently been fired from the music label that he has been signed to, is finally back in the recording studio. The rapper who is nicknamed J-Twizzle (real name Jericho Gawanab) is currently busy recording his newest album in Windhoek.
Antonio Djokic Dragan from Done Deal Records, one of the studio owners that the rapper is recording in, says that he does not mind sharing the studio with the Katutura-born musician. With the recent spate of bad publicity that the Namibian Male Artist of the Year 2011 has been receiving, Jericho has become known as a troubled artist, but this apparently does not concern Antonio too much. Antonio says “Yes, it is true that Jericho has received a lot of bad publicity, especially during last year, but that does not make him a bad musician. He is still a very talented musician and even after all that has happened he surely still deserves the opportunity to make music for the public.” A few weeks ago Jericho bumped the front of the car that he won as the best Male artist of the year in the NAMA competition last year. The rapper allegedly hit an animal on the road to Luderitz. He has previously been accused of violence against girl-friends, fans and fellow musicians. He is also rumoured to have a drinking problem. He attempted suicide on 11 January. At the end of January the artist was fired from Izinyoka Entertainment and a month later he was apparently stabbed by a stranger in Windhoek. According to Antonio the public should watch out, because it is only a matter of time before his latest songs will be heard on local radio stations. The rapper, who is turning 33 on 21 May, says his new album is expected to be released later this year. “I am just waiting for the Namibian Annual Music Awards (NAMA) show to finish, then I will start with the arrangements to release the album,” he says. According to Jericho the album will be entitled ‘Let me be me’. “After winning the best male artist of the year award in the NAMA competition last year, people have expected too much from me. There is only one me and I can only be myself and no one else. So, just let me be me,” he says. He claims that the lyrics of songs that are expected to feature on his new album will tell everything what he has gone through since the release of his last album. “The public can expect songs from me wherein I sing about all the disappointments that I went through in the music industry and people who always hate.” Besides releasing his new album the Namibian rapper is also expected to bring back the ‘Ghetto Child Entertainment’ music label that he set up in 2004. He says that he will also launch a new clothing line and sign up other artists to his label.
