WALVIS Bay has been hard hit by the deaths of several well-known residents this week. Peter Punzul, 74, died in his car last Saturday only a stone’s throw from the bird island near the coastal road where he used to walk his two beloved dogs every weekend for many years.

Namport denied the allegations by critics this week that its tug Onkoshi is still not registered to operate in Namibian waters and that mechanical breakdowns keep the vessel tied up in the harbour.

Walvis Bay’s fishing stakeholders expressed their disappointment this week over the granting of a fishing licence to the European Union registered super trawler vessel Dirk Diederik to catch a 10 000 tonnes horse mackerel quota in Namibian waters.

Bidfish to buy out Tunacor |

Namibian listed fishing giant, Bidfish Namibia, is in negotiations to buy out the Tunacor/Namib Fisheries (Pesca Puerta) Group, well-placed sources in the fishing industry confirmed to Informanté this week. An agreement is believed to be imminent, but an official announcement is expected only to be made according to criteria set out by the Namibia Stock Exchange, where Bidfish is a primary listed company as subsidiary of the Bidvest Group.

Many parts of the coastal region received more than their annual rainfall in just one day last weekend, during an unexpected Easter downpour last Saturday and the early hours of Sunday.
