The ill-treatment of Namibian crews and fisheries observers on the country’s fishing fleet by foreign officers aboard should stop immediately. So said the Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Bernhard Esau, last Friday when he ordered all vessel operators to issue written notices to their foreign personnel to stop these practises. Alternatively, any foreigner guilty of such conduct risks being deported.

Sources close to Elgin Brown Hamer Namibia and DCD Marine (SA), the marine industrial specialists carrying out the repair and maintenance project aboard the semi-submersible oil rig Transocean Marianas, in the port of Walvis Bay, reported most work will conclude by early next week.
