This is an open letter to the Swapo Party leadership, through its Secretary General, Dr Ngarikutuke Tjiriange, regarding the unresolved issue of the Swapo ex-detainees as the party congress, the highest decision making organ of the organisation, meets as from 27 to 30 November. We hope that you will take this opportunity to raise with the congress the need for the Swapo Party to address the long standing issue of serious and systematic human rights abuses that were committed before independence under Swapo in exile.

Damaras and Namas are not the only ones committing crime |

I wish to respond to an SMS about the social behaviour of the youth in Outjo town which was in the Namibian of 6 November 2007. Crime is apparently committed by mostly Damara/Nama speaking groups as it was alleged by the writer. While this could be true in the sense that the majority of people who live in Outjo are Damara/Nama speaking people, my question is why is it that when the

MY letter is directed at Mr Erastus Uutoni how dare he attack the Rally for Democracy and Progress party (RDP) and others and say they will be shown at Election 2009? You send us SMSes to stay with Swapo. This is wrong. What you are seeing now is democracy and it is time all Namibians understood democracy. They should go to a party that really helps people and not just promises.

RDP to change Namibias political landscape for better or for worse |
Friday, 30 November 2007 20:47 |
THE next few months, if not weeks, will witness a tectonic shift in public perceptions regarding Namibia’s political landscape, especially with the arrival of the RDP (Rally for Democracy Progress) party, headed by former Swapo stalwarts, Hidipo Hamutenya (HH) and Jesaya Nyamu (JN).
RDP has already proved to be a banana skin for Nujoma and the panjandrums surrounding him, would bring about a reconfiguration of different social groups as well as the who’s who. There is no doubt in my mind that Swapo will now employ state machinery, as it has in the past, to crush |

Vote of no confidence in Unams Hangula |
Thursday, 25 October 2007 08:31 |
Dear Editor,
Allow me some space in you newspaper to air my vote of no confidence in the vice-Chancellor of the University of Namibia (Unam). Useless decisions are being made, and this makes one wonder who makes them. When a soccer team is not performing, the coach is blamed; when a business is making poor decisions, such as Unam, the manager is blamed. The university has made a new decision that all its students whether loan or bursary holders must either pay N$4 000 cash or have it in their UNAM accounts. Now from where would I get such an amount of money? The reason I have a loan or bursary is because I do not have money, my parents cannot afford paying for my education. The worst part of this is the fact that students have not been informed formally, we only hear it from the Students Representative Council (SRC). Furthermore, as of next year all foreign students have to pay a non-refundable N$2 000, which will apparently be used to transport their corpses back to their countries, should they die. However, it is the responsibility of the respective embassies to send the corpses of their fellow citizens back to their home countries and not the University as it wants to claim. One would understand if this money is to be used for other things such as memorial services etc. But what if the student doesn’t die during the course of the training then he/she must get a refund, it is his/her money! As of next year, students living in the hostel will pay a ridiculous N$10 000 for the whole year. In addition to the ‘free’ breakfast, they will get either ‘free’ lunch or supper. Prof. Hangula, if students are already not happy with the breakfast, what makes you think they will like an increase in fees? They don’t care about the lunch or supper. The SRC president, Fillemon Wise used to protest about the breakfast, but as soon as he got new benefits, he all of a sudden enjoys it. These are the type of people that will sell their country. Now, from where exactly do these decisions come from? Top management of course! They are at least approved by the vice-Chancellor. If he is allowing such decisions to be made under his leadership, then he is uselessly passive and does not deserve his post. There are unnecessary expenditures at Unam such as the buying of metal sheets/covers to cover rubbish bins, for what? We need computers! Most library computers have viruses and are old. If there is no money, then computer studies students can do their practicals on them. The university must not rip-off students. It must mould and shape them into responsible citizens instead. We the students are dying for quality education and all we ever receive is an increase in tuition fees and not improvement. What happens to the money professor? We need someone who is not just interested in making money, but in the development of students as well, through quality tertiary education. If Prof Hangula cannot deliver, then he must look for another job elsewhere. We no longer need your services. UNAM is after all the highest educational institution in the country; it must show its colours.
Angry student |
