In the last few months, Informanté has alerted the nation of land invasions by drought-stricken communal cattle herders and owners in the north and in the north-east of the country, including Angolans coming to Namibia, and northern farmers looking for grazing in our northern neighbour as a result of the drought.

The usual celebrations that accompany Swapo election victories are suspiciously subdued in the case of the Grootfontein by-election which was won comfortably by Swapo. It even seems that the Swapo leadership is uncomfortable with the victory and this week a prominent Swapo youth leader from Omusati unintentionally lifted a part of the veil that is apparently drawn over the fault lines in the leadership.

Countries around the globe yesterday celebrated the imperative World Environment Day and it is a pity that it is not a recognised day on our calendar. We might be oblivious to the significance of environmental matters despite being a country with a celebrated eco-system that compels about a million tourists to visit our country to see wildlife, our natural beautiful landscapes, our alluring west coast with clean beaches, the Namib desert, and the cultural attractions around the country.
