The government and especially those civil servants who were responsible for the organisation of the 23rd Independence Celebrations at Oshakati must be congratulated for the huge and unprecedented attendance and participation of between 30 000 and 40 000 Namibians from all walks of life of the Namibian and international communities. Most of the crowd came from the most populated northern border areas which for 23 years were a battlefield, and 23 years later a symbol of discipline, peace and democracy.

ROAD safety in Namibia is an exceptionally complex issue in a society that needs to cover vast distances in the country with the second-lowest population density in the world. If the taxi-industry could have created its own heaven, they could not have done a better job than the creator himself.

At independence, the country had a relatively vast transport network, complemented by blacktop roads crisscrossing the country. Obviously, at independence the need for new plans to extend roads to dusty suburbs, townships, and initiate new long-distance arteries, became an imperative.

There is definitely no need to remind the country and its citizens that the 23rd celebration of Namibian Independence will be commemorated next week. Although it is a celebration, it is maybe also time for each individual citizen to reflect on what is means to be Namibian.
